With electric cars becoming more and more common, it really isn’t that uncommon for drivers to notice one or two driving around in their area. With more people opting for all electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles for day-to-day transportation, there have been many innovative aftermarket products aimed at extending range. Quick chargers and “battery-swap” locations are without a doubt some of the most popular options that allow EV drivers to get a full battery in anywhere from a few minutes to around a half-hour.
However, one German company came up with the idea of offering a towable battery trailer that extend highway driving time by around 4 hours, depending on driver behavior. These little trailers are rated for towing at 62 miles per hour which may seem slow, but actually helps with conserving power and extending range even more. In essence, drivers sign up for this service and are given a trailer and a kit to hook it up to their car. Once the battery is low, they can trade it in for a fully charged trailer until they need to repeat the process again.
Here at Dick Dyer Mitsubishi, we are glad to see the civilian sector getting involved in EV technology! As public acceptance of battery powered vehicles increases, our dependence on fossil fuels diminishes..
With the intent of spreading knowledge and acceptance of electric vehicles, Plug In America, along with the Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association, has scheduled the second annual National Plug In Day for Sunday, September 23. While education is the primary purpose of this event, there are also fun activities planned that can put interested individuals into contact with EV drivers and their vehicles.
The first National Plug In Day last year went over very well and this year, the count for participating cities is up to 60! Each local event will be lead by local advocates and EV drivers who want to spread the joy of driving a purely electric car. Activities planned for most cities include ride-alongs, info booths, EV tailgating and parades, and more. Since the primary goal is to get people accustomed to electric cars, interested visitors will be able to ride along in an EV with its owner and get a closer look at the inner workings of these cars or even test drive available electric cars for themselves.
The event is not intended for any specific automaker or model of EV and all electric vehicles are welcome, including the occasional “do-it-yourself” conversions. Some of the most common cars there are the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Toyota Prius and Prius Plug-In, Chevy Volt, Nissan LEAF, and even the Tesla Roadster. However, it is certainly not limited to these production cars. You never really know what or who you will run into at the event.
There are three events scheduled within about 180 miles or less of Columbia, SC. At Dick Dyer Mitsubishi, we highly encourage anyone interested to go check out the events in Durham, NC; Knoxville, TN; or Kingsport, TN.
With the big premier of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) coming up at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on September 27th, the automaker has released some more details about the groundbreaking CUV in a release.
According to Mitsubishi the Outlander PHEV will be the world’s first Plug-In Hybrid SUV and will enjoy “The best of three worlds.” It will feature the environmental performance and quiet operating behaviors of an EV, the capacity and on- and off-road capabilities of an AWD SUV, and the range and familiarity of a conventional internal combustion engine powered vehicle.
The Plug-In Hybrid CUV is scheduled to be introduced in the Japanese market as early as the first half of 2013, quickly followed by European, North American, and other international models. Major features of the Outlander PHEV include Automatic Drive Mode Selection, High-Capacity Drive Battery, and Dual Motor 4WD System.
The drive mode will be automatically selected depending on several factors including the driving style, conditions, remaining battery charge, and fuel efficiency. In EV mode, the vehicle will be propelled completely under the power of two electric motors. One motor powers the front wheels and another powers the rear wheels; drawing electricity from the drive battery and generating zero CO2 emissions. In Series Mode, the gasoline engine acts as a generator to power the electric motors. This only occurs when the battery level is low or when extra power is needed for aggressive driving, acceleration, passing, or climbing an incline. Parallel Hybrid Mode will be activated at higher driving speeds when the gas engine is most efficient. In this mode, power to the wheels comes from the internal combustion engine with assistance granted by the electric motors as needed.
Basically, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is going to be one of the coolest plug-in hybrids on the road. With all-electric four wheel drive and a gasoline engine to extend the range, it sounds like the ultimate machine for fun and fuel efficiency.
After extensive delays and no shortage of excitement, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb finally took place on Sunday, August 12, 2012. This year is also unique because it marks the first time that the entire hill climb course has been paved. Previously there were sections of the track that were still loose gravel and dry dirt. The fully paved course allowed for some spectacular finish times and even a new record!
During this historic race event, Mitsubishi sent to very unique vehicles up the 12.42 mile long, 156 turn course. A completely stock 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV driven by off-road driver Beccy Gordon and an i-MiEV Evolution electric racing vehicle, purpose built for the race, driven by Hiroshi Masuoka were both entered in the electric vehicle class.
The completely stock i-MiEV was the only street-legal 100% electric-powered production car to enter in the race and finished 6th in its class with a time of 15:10.557. The i-MiEV Evolution, in spite of having wrecked only a few days earlier, completed the course in a time of 10:30.850, good enough for 2nd place in the electric vehicle class and 8th overall!
Here at Dick Dyer Mitsubishi, we would like to congratulate both drivers on completing the challenging course and achieving impressive times! If you would like to see an i-MiEV, the same car that Beccy Gordon drove, stop by the dealership or check us out online!
Other than the i-MiEV, Mitsubishi has not released a purely fuel-efficiency oriented model in the United States in quite some time. Many of Mitsubishi’s vehicles do not compete in the entry level class either as they are a bit higher quality and sportier than most “starter” cars. However, depending on the fate of the 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage, all this could be changing very soon. The Mitsubishi Mirage, which was introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show last year, would be a very small, very fuel-efficient car with a price tag to match. It would be a great car for customers who need a basic car that does point A to point B without causing too much trouble. However, it is not yet decided if it will be made available in the States.
As with most cars in the compact and mini-car segment, its primary appeal would come from a very affordable price tag and cost of ownership along with some fun and crazy color options. A 1.0 liter, 3-cylinder gasoline engine would put out around 67 horsepower. While that doesn’t sound like much, keep in mind that the Mirage would only weigh in at around 2000 lbs! Most drivers would take the smaller engine to save on gas with prices only continuing to go up, especially when you consider it should return about 67 MPG. If you are looking for a great, gas-saving car at an excellent price, keep an eye out for the Mirage and hope that Mitsubishi decides to bring it over to the U.S.
